Kalevalanpäivä - The Day of Finnish Culture Feb 28th

The weather outside was delightful - Not!

So we decided to take a afternoon trip to the museum in the city !  ..by train!

Kids begged me to take pics of the "million ducks" they saw outside.  I educated  little Floridians about "pullasorsa" .....and thought that a pic from Kaisaniemenranta  with Finnish flag would not be bad. We discussed the concept of "flag days", only on special day's  are you allowed to raise the finnish flag (Today it happened to be a day of Finnish Culture)...see..educational!

And here we are!.. at The National Museum of Finland. All Kids under 18 years old get in for free (!!) and I got in for free also as an homeeducator ! (they are not very business minded). Kids workshop was great but the rest of the museum was gloomy. Well what do you expect from dead things?..at least they weren't doing a good job making history alive. (probably cause they don't think business again..but let's not cross into politics) So our  biggest learning experience happened in the cafe.... learning to say "kiitos" and "ole hyvä", please and thank you in finnish. As I found out that the kids weren't really remembering their manners at all!! and that they do know finnish well enough that I can now require them to use Please and Thank You...So off to the gift shop for more practice! And that's the thing I love about homeschool: Flexibility, You can always tacle the subject as it comes up naturally! So who cares about history..it's was about manners today...
...And the next day...

we made some money...

learned our euro coins
and played shop both in english and finnish..Kids got a kick out of it and wanted to keep playing forever! In the evening, as it happened,  we dropped in to our friends "homesale" (yardsale but inside )  and kids got to practice even more  with their real money!  So that needed to be tackled and I did it throughly!  And about Finnish Culture...Well what about that? Not for 2 nd and 3 rd grades for now..

Time to blog!

Life is busy. Grown up stuff. Right now we travel in Finland and preach. Kids are doing 2nd grade and 3 rd grade...In the hotel rooms...in a car...on strangers kitchen table...

I decided to start a blog, as a grown-up, to make more room to a homeschool aspect of our life. This is to our kids!

And  there's also the fun in each city of new parks, playgrounds, museums that we've never been before!  Enjoy! Join the ride!
